Lula Melton was born to James Melton and Geneva Thomas on August 28, 1964 in Orlando, FL. Lula was raised in a loving home with five of siblings in Altamont Springs, FL. In 1982, she graduated from Lyman high School, and entered into Seminole Community College. She earned her associated degree in Early Education and Child Development in 1984. Lula moved to Gainesville, FL in 1985, and in that same year gave birth to her first son, Timothy. In 1987 she met the love of her life, Terry Lewis, and in 1988 she gave birth to her second son, Marcel. Lula and Terry were wed in 1999.
Lula loved children and serving her community. She was affectionately known as “Big Lu.” Lula and her best friend Queen earned a reputation in the community for organizing parties, carnivals, and other events for the children in Gainesville. She provided a positive influence and experiences that created great childhood memories in the hearts of those she served. Lula also exercised her love for children while working in the childcare industry. Parents and children alike loved and trusted Lula.
In 1994, Lula joined Mount Herman Missionary Baptist Church. She turned her life over to God, and was baptized that same year. She faithfully served Mt. Herman and continued to show her love for the children and the Lord. She organized and facilitated the children events and activities at Mt. Herman with her friend Queen, including Vacation Bible School. Lula later joined the Rock Church of Gainesville where she faithfully served for 20 years. Lula loved to cook, and was known as an accomplished baker. She took great pride and joy in using her cooking skills to serve the Lord’s house.
Lula was a devoted family member. She loved her family very much and honored her vow to her father to stay close with her family, and siblings especially. She made sure to reach out to family regularly and to acknowledge birthdays, anniversaries, and holidays. Lula loved her boys, and would gladly tell you how proud of them she was at any time. She devoted her life to raising them to be loving, giving, helpful, resourceful men who loved God. Lula loved life and shared her beautiful smile and joyful spirit with use all. On February 1, 2020 in Gainesville, FL, God called Lula home. She will be greatly missed.
Lula Mae Melton was survived by her sons, Timothy Jones and Marcel Melton; her mother, Geneva Thomas Melton; her siblings, Jimmy Melton, McAurthur Melton, Melvin Melton, Sr., James Barron, Dexter Barron, Sunobia Sims, Doris Doty, Denise Lopez, and Cathy Hilson; a host of beloved nieces, nephews, cousins, relatives and friends.
