Obituary

Harry Fremont Jackson Sr, age 90 of Melrose, FL passed away on Thursday, November 18, 2021

Harry was born in Melrose, Florida, to Harry and Ruth (Goodson) Jackson on May 16, 1931.  He went to high school at Melrose School and graduated in 1949. He worked as a Lineman for Clay Electric, Coop. before volunteering for service with the United States Navy during the Korean Conflict.  He returned home and met his future wife Jerry Breeland at a Melrose School basketball game where she was coaching the opposing team.  He followed the bus to Gainesville so they could have dinner together with the team and they would say, “The rest is history”. Shortly after they were married, Jerry convinced Harry to use the GI Bill to earn a Bachelor of Arts in Education degree from the University of Florida and he began teaching with her and driving the bus for her teams.  He served for 30 years as a teacher in Putnam County, first at Melrose School and later at Interlachen High School.  Harry was a lifelong member of Eliam Baptist Church and a member of Melrose Masonic Lodge, No. 89. He was physically active as a runner and enjoyed lifting weights daily.  He began each day by solving the Gainesville Sun word jumble and sudoku puzzle.  Harry was an avid reader and life-long history buff.

Harry is preceded in death by his parents Harry and Ruth Jackson, and sister Harriet Celia Jackson Sikes.

Harry is survived by his wife of 66 years, Jerry (Breeland) Jackson of Melrose; and sons Harry F. Jackson, Jr., also of Melrose, and Mitchell Raymond Jackson of Winter Springs, Fl.
