GLORIA BARBARA JEAN GAINES daughter of the late Emmanuel Morris and Hattie Henderson was born December 19, 1942 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. She was the eldest of ten children.
She was known to everyone as “Barbara”. We used to laugh because she didn’t know her real name was Gloria until she went to get a marriage license.
Barbara was educated in the Philadelphia Public School System. She graduated from Overbrook High School in 1960.
She was united in holy matrimony to Joseph Gaines on November 20, 1963. This union was blessed with four children. She landed her first job at Presbyterian Hospital in the kitchen and was then promoted to the medical records department. She was also employed at Devereaux Schools working with children with intellectual disabilities. Barbara worked at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia for 30 years in the medical records department until she retired on January 7, 2005.
Barbara had a sweet, gentle and kind spirit which drew many people to her. Her unwavering faith and belief in Jesus Christ and what He did at the Cross was the center of her life. Barbara was a woman Jesus could teach. She was a faithful and strong woman of God. She never let a day go by without sharing her love for Jesus. A few years ago Barbara purchased Bibles for all of her siblings, children, grandchildren and other family members. Reading the word of God was important to her as she communed with her Savior daily. Her heart’s desire was for her Lord and Savior to step off the pages of the Bible and grip you with his marvelous love so that you would want nothing more than to follow Him and learn from Him all the days of your life.
Barbara felt deeply and loved fiercely. Her tears flowed as abundantly as her laughter. Barbara was both soft and powerful. She was practical and spiritual. As a strong woman of God, she loved, she forgave and she persevered – the epitome of a woman of God.
After a brief illness, she gained her wings on April 9, 2021. The Lord welcomed her into Heaven and said “Well done thy good and faithful servant”.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph Gaines and her sister, Gwendolyn Henderson. She leaves to cherish her memory: four children, Sharon, Gwen (Fred), Val (Mitch) and Joseph “Snoop” (Dishea); five brothers, Gary (Brenda), Kenny (Gwen), Harvey, Keith (Missy) and Brian; three sisters, Carla (Konrad), Janice (Bobby) and Yvette (David); twelve grandchildren, Joseph III (Dee), Dontae, Terrence, Aaron, Carla, Carl (Petetta), Micheline’ (Darius), Tahlea, Tiara, Joey, Sumaiyah and Idris; eleven great- grandchildren, Tymere, Kiley, Taylan, Kyrie, Chase, Mason, Macai, Kylar, Meila, KJ and Braylen; two aunts, Betty Winder and Helen Lomax; special nephew, Steven Crawford; childhood friend, Isabelle Crawford; life long friends, Joyce and Sandy; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
