Vernon Victor Vandiver, Jr.

Obituary

Vernon Victor Vandiver Jr., passed away peacefully on May 26,2022 at Haven Hospice, Gainesville FL. with his wife and son by his side.  Vernon was born in Miami FL on February 11, 1944, the only child of Vernon and Mary Vandiver.  The family lived in Ochopee, FL.  He was very proud of growing up in the Everglades and his childhood friends remained his friends for life.  Vernon attended school in Everglades, FL and graduated from Everglades HS in 1961. Hewent on to earn a Bachelor’s degree from the University of Florida and a PhD from North Carolina State University in Raleigh NC.

 

He was commissioned as a 2nd Lt. in the USAF in December 1965 and served four years of active duty. He was stationed at the 780th Radar Squadron, Fortuna AFS North Dakota, the 347th Tactical Fighter Wing, Takaoyama, Japan and the 678th Radar Squadron, Tyndall AFB, Panama City Fl.  He then served in the USAF Reserve and was presented with the Legion of Merit upon his retirement

as a Colonel on April 30, 1997.  

 

Vernon was the first aquatic weed specialist hired by UF in 1975 and worked with IFAS for 28 years. He was stationed at the Ft. Lauderdale Research Centerand worked throughout the state of Florida and beyond.   He was recognized as an expert in his field.  He was active in the South Florida, Florida, and national Aquatic Plant Management Societies. He served as president of the state organization in 2011 and received the Max C. McCowen Friendship Honor from the national society in 2012.

 

Vernon is preceded in death by his father, Vernon Vandiver, Sr., his mother, Mary Caroline Vandiver and brother-in-law Daniel Lunin.  His survivors include his wife, Frances Vandiver, his son Scott Vandiver, daughter-in-law Holly Vandiver, his granddaughters Erin Vandiver and Ashley Vandiver, his grandson Jeffrey Vandiver, sister-in-law Pauline Lunin, sister-in-law Mary Miller, brother-in-law David Miller, brother-in-law Frank Mariello, sister-in-law Janet Mariello, and many nieces and nephews.

 

Burial will take place following a committal service on June 23rd, at 1pm at:

Florida National Cemetery

6502 SW 102nd Ave.

Bushnell, FL  33513.

 

A celebration of life will be held on June 23rd, at 2:30pm at:

 

Plantations Palms Golf Club

23253 Plantation Palms Blvd

Land O’ Lakes, FL 34639.
