Donald Edward Shy aka “DJ Silkman” 58 of Jacksonville Florida, passed away on Monday, May 9, 2022. He is the son of the late Billie Faye Smith and Jimmy Melvin Shy and was born in Cleveland Ohio. Mr. Shy was a member of the United States Navy where he served 20 years before retiring honorably. Out of 20 years, he served 16 at sea.
Friends and family loved his barbecue, some said he had a masters degree in BBQology. His kitchen is lined with the many Hot and BBQ sauces he loved to collect. He was born in Cleveland, Ohio and raised in East Cleveland where he graduated from Shaw High School where he lettered in wrestling and football, the Mighty Shaw Cardinals. From the looks of his Man-Cave, he was an avid fan of the Cleveland Browns, created his own little dawg pound at home.
His fondest childhood memories were enjoying and being around family at his grandparents house in Cleveland Ohio. Family and good people were the things that made him smile. His proudest career accomplishment was becoming an accomplished DJ after completing a course of instruction at the Connecticut School of Broadcasting. He really loved music and as a DJ, his go to saying was “I’m here for the people”. His love of music was only second to his love of his family. His past-time and hobbies were of course spending time mixing music. He was fun loving and was a fish when it came to swimming. While in the Navy, one of his special achievements was becoming the first black commanding duty officer on the USS Constitution. As an Arena Employee, he was an active member of the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees, Moving Pictures Technicians, Artists and Allied Crafts of the United States, Its Territories and Canada. Donald loved serving his community through his endeavors with the Most Worshipful Union Grand Lodge Free and Accepted Masons of Florida, Belize, Central America and its Jurisdiction, Incorporated Prince Hall Affiliated. He was recognized and received a certificate of appreciation for his work during annual back to school drives. Coach Shy was a phenomenal motivator and football coach for the Lakeshore Athletic Association where he received multiple awards and thanks for his “Encouragement and Understanding”.
He is survived by his wife, Sharon Shy and son Kristopher Johnson, Jacksonville FL; In-laws; mother Julia Walrond, San Diego CA; father Christopher Hamilton (wife Lavaughn), San Diego CA; brother Derrick Phillips (wife John), Tucson AZ; brother, Daryl Shy, Chandler AZ; sister Annette Shy, Cleveland OH; sister Neema Tucker, Cleveland OH; sister Arian Ahkir El, Cleveland OH; sister Akiko Shy, Oakland CA; niece Kristina Shy, Vancouver WA; brother Hayden Hamilton (wife Jenni), Seattle WA; brother Michael Walrond, San Diego CA; sister Michele Walrond, Berlin Germany; sister Zaria Hamilton San Diego CA; brother Javaughn Lewis, Indianapolis IN and a host of cousins, family and friends throughout the world.
The funeral service for Mr. Shy will be officiated by Mr. David Taylor and held at the Jacksonville National Cemetery at 10 AM on Wednesday, May 18, 2022.
